About Home For Dinner
How We Began
"My father was 80 years old when we watched 'Flags of Our Fathers' together. The film chronicles the story of soldiers’ struggles and sacrifices at Iwo Jima – many so young to be willing to serve community and country. As we watched, it struck me that in 1945, he had been a young cadet, training to be a Navy pilot in the States, just like these brave young men. I had always been proud of and grateful for his service, but in this moment it really hit home with me – I wanted to make a difference. I began volunteering at the VA, helping out wherever I could be of service. Home For Dinner became a program that was strictly a way to say 'thank you' for all the service and sacrifice, a very simple idea that could one day be repeated in any county of any state." – Beth Hickman, Founder
